Attending the 65th American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting as a patient advocate was an enlightening experience that ventured far beyond medical jargon and research presentations. Attending a whirlwind of sessions, even virtually, my days were filled with insights, taking meticulous notes, and embracing the challenge of distilling complex information into digestible tweets and blogs. Being a member of the International Myeloma Foundation’s Myeloma Voices team is an honor I don’t take lightly. These team members, passionate and supportive, brought laughter, compassion, and challenges that propelled my growth. Thank you, IMF and team, for allowing me to be a part of this journey.

My days began with an anticipation for the day’s presentations, each offering a glimpse into the multifaceted world of myeloma research. It was more than just listening; it was deciphering, translating, and weaving intricate findings into narratives that patients and caregivers could comprehend and relate to. I don’t understand everything, that’s for sure. Despite this, every note taken was not just a scribble on paper but a step towards empowering others with information that could potentially ease their journey.

But ASH wasn’t just about the formal presentations. It was about the camaraderie formed in sharing moments with the IMF Myeloma Voices team. Their passion for advocacy, their caring nature, and their ability to infuse even the most serious discussions with humor created an environment where growth was inevitable. Challenges were embraced, views were expanded, and perspectives were enriched, all thanks to this incredible team.

Meetings with sponsors were a pivotal part of this journey. These sponsors played an instrumental role in supporting our advocacy efforts. Their belief in our cause, their support, and their collaboration are all deeply appreciated. So, a heartfelt thank you goes out to Bristol Myers Squib, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Karyopharm, Regeneron, and Takeda.

As the virtual curtains drew close on ASH, I found myself reflecting not just on the research but on the connections forged during this experience. To the sponsors who supported us and the Myeloma Voices teammates who are more than just colleagues, but a source of inspiration and growth, thank you. It’s because of these collective efforts that our advocacy extends its reach, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those navigating the complexities of myeloma.
